Need More People on-Site, but You're Just Not a "People" Person. Here's Your Solution
When it comes to gathering inspiration throughout our everyday work-life, the best and brightest leaders are the ones who specifically inspired us. If this has been the case for you, the chances are high that some of your previous bosses have inspired you to do the right thing at one point throughout your life.
However, if we take a look at real-life examples, not a lot of people out there study or practice leadership skills. Not many people have a natural knack for leadership either. You see, throughout your lifetime, the chances are high that you have had a boss at some point that had a natural knack for leadership. Someone who didn’t study it, but was born with it, like a talent. It is very similar to the sort of things football players have, where some have a natural instinct to know when and how to kick the ball, even without too much training.
Luckily for you, you do not have to specifically be a natural leader in order to find a solution for your specific issue.
If you need more people on-site, but are just not a people’s person, there are a few basic things you can do in order to get out of your situation safely.
LEADERSHIP BASICS
Ever since Spades was founded, we have considered leadership skills to be among the most important aspects of running any business, and the labour hire industry is no different. Throughout this article, you will find some of the best and proven ways through which you will have the most effective results within your company.
All of these are specifically used by us here at Spades with proven results and we swear by these methods.
There are three leadership styles and it is up to you to decide which one works most efficiently for you.
➡️First, understand The Boss type– the decisions are made by a single point and driven by the leader’s instincts, drive and creativity. All significant decisions cross one desk and run through one pair of ears as a result, you've got The Boss type. The leader is involved in every sale and is the chief of the organization.
➡️Second, you have The Inspirational Leader- the evolution of The Boss model. Collaboration here is present and is much greater than the command and control model. The boss has a large personality and remains the chief when it comes to the decision making process. The difference is in the fact that the inspirational leader is much more collaborative and evolved.
➡️Third, you have The Millennial Leader – millennials are currently coming to the age where they can work in the construction industry and as such the perfect leader needs to understand their mentality, needs, desires and work-flow. Note: Millennials have way less respect for ranks and strict procedures. They value creativity and freedom. Keep this in mind regardless of your opinion of how things SHOULD be.
UNDERSTAND YOUR LEADERSHIP STYLE
Through understanding how you lead, you can elaborate more on each individual step of the way towards future leadership. Start noticing the little nuances in the things you do, and in the way you address, communicate with, and appreciate your workers. The more time you commit to this, the better leader you will become.
• Encourage Problem-Solving.
There are many ways through which you can encourage problem solving and creativity, but at the end of the day the most important and influential thing you can do is be there with the workers when they need you. Inspire them by asking them questions, and generally have discussions about what they think about a certain project or situation. Delegating responsibility is also a great way to throw them in the deep-end quickly.
• Serve as a role model.
Make the steps that you want other people to emulate (it works for employees and any other relationships too). Be a role model for them, and give them something to look forward to. Make promises about promotions, and actually live up to those promises. Do NOT behave in ANY way you'd like them to behave.
• Be professional about what you do.
If you are serious about the job you do, the chances are high that people will notice that and in turn, push the project further as a result. When you are truly ethical and professional about something, it shines through you even if you yourself might not notice it initially.
• Listen and communicate efficiently.
In the construction industry, we tend to be very practical about everything, however, it can be harmful for the communication side of things. Before jumping to any conclusions at all, ensure that you have heard both sides of any story. Listen to your workers on a daily basis and ensure that you communicate all of the information they need to know to them efficiently, as even the smallest piece of information, when missed, can derail the entire operation.
• Have a positive attitude and avoid being grumpy.
This point is pretty simple but rarely done in the construction industry. Keep in mind that people love positivity - even construction workers. When you are walking to work every morning and you see someone smiling, it just helps you get this positive energy within your system on a subconscious level. The more positive you are and welcoming with your personality, the better your workers will start to respond to your requests. As a result, you will end up being respected more.
If you're a negative person that has no issues throwing curse words here and there or being straight offensive with other workers or in general, the tip is: STOP right away.
• Encourage people to contribute.
The best way to motivate progress is to encourage contribution in form of opinions or proactivity in general. The more your workers help each other out, the faster the overall build will flow and as a result, the entire operation will flow a lot more smoothly. This is also an excellent team-building exercise as they will learn to appreciate one another more.
• Motivate and appreciate your followers.
The chances are high that you already have followers. These are people that look up to you, listen to you, and genuinely feel like you are their mentor in a way. Ensure that you are both acknowledging them, and motivating them to be more. This is important, as you will want to remain in that high of a position within their minds in order to not lose the respect and attention.
OUTSOURCE INTERNALLY
Take a moment to consider the possibility that you might indeed have a natural leader employed, even if you yourself are not one. This is typically a worker that is respected by the other workers surrounding him. Rank within the company does not matter here. If he/she has the authority and people listen to him/her, then that’s your leader. This person then has the capacity to find other people and employ them within your company due to the high level of communication and social prowess.
✳️ Keep in mind that outsourcing LEADERSHIP internally does NOT means that you will delegate the management.
You still will have to deal with all of the management associated with the logistics, handle the payroll, insurance, and other things that go hand in hand with onboarding new on-site employees for your construction business.
OUTSOURCE EXTERNALLY
If none of that seems to work for you, have no fear as there is a solution specifically tailored for you.
You can always hire a Labour Hire company such as Spades in order to handle this onboarding process for you. We will essentially be the managers and leaders in your workforce. If you are in the construction industry, we are happy to connect all the dots for you, even in the BIG teams.
▶️The biggest advantage of using a labour hire company is due to the overall payroll costs associated with onboarding new members. You also gain benefits such as time-saving, improved productivity, flexibility, and provision of specialized skills.
The utilization of a labour hire company is just what you might need in order to expand your business. While you handle the management of the projects and bid for contracts, we will handle your staffing needs and ensure that you are equipped with a solid workforce that is able to meet and conduct real-world projects. You can even go one step further an include payroll and tax as well as worker’s compensation related activities to this project. These things will eat up a lot of your time if you want to manage them by yourself, so having a labour hire company step in and handle all of this work for you might be a good idea.
This is an excellent option if you either do not have the time to handle everything manually or are simply not a people’s person and might end up doing more harm than good as a result. Worry not though, as labour hire companies exist specifically to solve this issue for you.
